A Cuban opposition human rights group reported Friday that at least 35 dissidents were temporarily detained this week and some "beaten" by police of the communist government in the city of Camagüey, 530 km east of Havana. Illegal Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN) said in a statement that at least 23 opponents were "brutally beaten and arrested" last Wednesday, after "make a demonstration in the streets of that city." The dissidents protesting "the cruel and inhuman treatment" in prison receiving dissident Orlando Zapata, on hunger strike since December, according to the president of the CCDHRN, Elizardo Sanchez. Another 14 people were detained Thursday in a house in Camagüey, where coordinated "solidarity dfsd actions" in favor of Zapata, considered a "prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International" since 2003, according to the text. "Almost all the detainees were released but five continuing" in units of the police in Camagüey and Guantánamo (west end), added CCHRNC, also expressed concern about "critical state" of Zapata and asked the government to put it in "unconditionally released." dfsd Sanchez noted that "the act of repression by the political police" was led by the top leadership of the Communist Party in Camagüey. In its annual report, released in January, the committee felt that the situation of human rights in Cuba is "the worst of the continent", with 201 political prisoners, and in 2009 the policy of repression, intimidation and detention remained Temporary opponents.
