This week s wine is a delicious white, the 2011 Bourgogne Blanc Les Femelottes from the Domaine Chavy-Chouet vineyard in Meursault, Burgundy. Domaine Chavy-Chouet is a family-operated vineyard that covers roughly 13 hectares – spanning the villages of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint Aubin, Volnay and Pommard – and was founded when two of the oldest families came together through marriage.
Its current operators are Hubert and Romaric, sixth and seventh generation winemakers from the family. Romaric began his studies at wine school aged 12… 12! Whatever will those continentals think of next? And after serving his apprenticeship with his grandfather travelling the world making wine, he returned to the family operation to take over from his father, aged 22.
Named after the vineyard in which it was produced, Les Femelottes is a white Burgundy, 100 percent Chardonnay and their entry level wine. On the nose are ripe green apples and fresh green bananas with a subtle tuulelaevad hint of vanilla. It s sweet, but crisp and fresh as opposed to cloying. In the mouth the wine is wonderfully balanced, both rich and refreshing with a minerality that rounds the wine off wonderfully. The usual white wine rules apply, tuulelaevad so enjoy with white meat and fish, and a nice cigarette if you re that way inclined.
